National Beef Speakers Bureau Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How are NBSB members selected?
Members are selected via an annual application process.  Interested candidates complete a two-page application, provide a professional resume and submit one letter of recommendation.  Applications can be found at http://www.ancw.org/nationalbeefspeakersbureau.aspx and must be received at ANCW headquarters by December 15, 2011.  All candidates will be notified by mid-January.

What are the skills or requirements of an NBSB member?
Most importantly, an NBSB candidate must be passionate about modern beef production and be willing to volunteer their time to engage with meal-time decision makers and youth to tell our Beef Story.  Being comfortable speaking in front of large groups and effective communication skills are also key components.  All NBSB members must be ANCW members, graduates of the Masters of Beef Advocacy Program (MBA), and  BQA-certified.

Do NBSB members get paid for their time “Telling the Beef Story?”
CattleWomen speakers are volunteers.  The do not get paid for their time; however, they are eligible for mileage/gas reimbursement for all qualifying speaking engagements.

Who is the target audience for the NBSB?
Mothers, sisters, fathers, brothers, neighbors, community leaders, students, and more!   The goal of the NBSB is to connect with meal-time decision makers and youth so that beef becomes an easy choice for a safe, healthy and nutritious meal.

What tools are provided to members of the NBSB?
NBSB members attend a mandatory two-day training in Denver.  During this time they polish their presentation skills and learn how to incorporate key industry messages into their stories.  All presentation materials such as the USDA-approved PowerPoint presentations, audience handouts, surveys, projectors, online resources, etc. are also provided to support NSBS efforts.

Who funds the NBSB?
The NBSB is partially funded by the Beef Checkoff.  Private and corporate sponsorships also provide dollars to support the program.  The NBSB is managed by the American National CattleWomen, Inc.

The Beef Checkoff Program (www.MyBeefCheckoff.com) was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill.  The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products.  States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.

The American National CattleWomen, Inc. is a national non-profit organization providing a voice for women who share a passion for the U.S. beef industry.  ANCW offers leadership development, education, volunteer opportunities, national programs, and participates in the strategic planning process of the cattle industry.

When did the NBSB start?
The NBSB began in the fall of 2010.

How many speakers are in the NBSB?
The NBSB currently has 19 speakers and hopes to grow to 40 or more in 2012.

How many people does the NBSB anticipate reaching in 2012?
The goal for 2012 is to reach a minimum of 10,000 consumers and youth.

How do speaking engagements get scheduled for NBSB members?
CattleWomen volunteers, the Telling the Beef Story Manager, and various affiliates help to schedule presentations.  Social media and personal networking have also proven to be effective  channels; however, word-of-mouth connections have yielded the most connections.

How far do NBSB have to travel?
NBSB speakers have flexibility on where and how far they travel.  Some speakers would prefer to stay within a 50-100 mile radius of their hometowns, while others are open to traveling throughout their state.  The goal of the NBSB is to reach as many urban communities as possible and each speaker works with the Program Manager to determine the available budget and overall feasibility of travel to events which require travel of a considerable distance.

Can I personalize the beef story I tell?
All presentations must be approved by the USDA.  That being said, NBSB speakers are able to work with the Program Manager to personalize presentations and gain approval.
